Output surface
SEO is about ranking in Google (and Bing) blue-link results. AEO is about being named in AI chat answers and in AI-overview blocks at the top of Google results.
What gets ranked
SEO ranks pages. AEO ranks entities. If a buyer searches "best roofer Dallas", SEO might surface your Dallas roofing page. AEO surfaces your business name inside a conversational answer alongside a short case for why.
Ranking signals
SEO weights backlinks, on-page keyword relevance, Core Web Vitals, user signals (CTR, dwell). AEO weights structured data, entity consistency across the web, review consensus (not just volume — agreement across sources), citation density on sites AI crawlers trust (Reddit, Quora, trade press).
Content format
SEO rewards long-form comprehensive content. AEO rewards short, declarative, extractable chunks — because AI engines quote verbatim. A well-structured FAQ section gets cited more than a 3,000-word essay, even if the essay has more information.
Timing and compounding
SEO rankings move over months as backlinks accumulate. AEO moves similarly — 45-90 days for the first citations — but once established, AEO positions tend to be stickier because entity signals are harder to displace than ranking signals.
Do you need both?
For most businesses, yes. AEO depends on crawlable, indexable pages, which is also what SEO builds. The two reinforce each other. If forced to pick one in 2026, AEO is where the asymmetric opportunity lives — most of your competitors have not started.
